Abstract

The 1996 shrimp farm output in Thailand topped world and Asian production with about 160,000 tons, followed by Indonesia and China (90,000 and 80,000 tons, respectively). These numbers are below the figures for 1995, white spot disease being the cause of many farms closing down for several months. More lethal than the taura virus in the western hemisphere, white spot has taken a tremendous toll of Asian shrimp over the past two years.
