Abstract

The possibility that the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) would sponsor an international conference on the allocation of fishing rights focused exclusively on the interests of small-scale harvesters and traditional fishing communities is heartening. Such an event is long overdue and, if it were to provide an opportunity to hear and document those authentic voices that have been resisting and offering alternatives to the private appropriation of public fisheries resources, it would be a good thing.
