During the recent past, considerable changes were taken place along the mainland coast in the pattern of tuna exploitation, especially targeted fishing of hitherto underexploited oceanic tunas. Since 2000, trawl line fishing targeting oceanic tuna has been initiated by deep sea shrimp trawlers of Colachel at 150–300 m depth, as a supplementary effort to trawling. Country crafts along the southwest coast were being motorised and fishing activity was extended to deeper and distant waters for multi-day gill netting and tuna long lining.
