The purpose of this thesis is to widen the scope of maritime history so that it encompasses all people whose lives are affected by the sea. The term 'maritime women' is very broad and includes all women who are influenced by the sea, women working at sea as crew members on all types of vessels, and ashore in sea-related industries, as well as mothers, wives and daughters of fishermen, sailors, oil-rig workers and others who depend on the sea for their livelihood.
