Abstract

This paper contains information on steps and initiatives taken or recommended by India to improve the conservation and management of fishery resources and other marine living resources with a view to achieving sustainable fisheries and protecting vulnerable marine ecosystem and biodiversity. The paper emphasizes the importance of the full implementation by India of all international fishery instruments, whether legally binding or voluntary, which promote the conservation, management and sustainable use of marine living resources. It also emphasizes the importance of cooperation among States, directly or through sub-regional and regional fisheries management organizations or arrangements (RFMO/As) to address unsustainable fishing practices and promote sustainable fisheries in areas beyond national jurisdiction, including through implementing their responsibilities as flag States, improving governance of RFMO/As, and cooperating in the establishment of new organizations or arrangements where none exist.
