Abstract

Recruitment to the Norwegian fishing fleet is a much debated theme among the actors in the fishing industry. Recruitment is based on how the fisheries employment system operates. However, we do not know much about how this system actually works and how the fisheries recruit. The concept of Coastal Employment Systems was developed in the 1970s and early 1980s, and the system had to be well coordinated and organized, locally, to secure recruitment to the fisheries, as well as employment and settlement in coastal communities. Modernity has affected Norwegian fisheries and significantly changed the Coastal Employment System. New relations and networks are formed, affecting the system and methods of recruitment. In this article we discuss how the Coastal Employment System has changed since the 1970s. In particular, we address how modernization has affected the system. Finally, we describe what the contemporary Coastal Employment System looks like and how recruitment takes place in the Norwegian fishing fleet today.
