Abstract
Jharkhand is one of India’s poorest states. Its poverty rate is the highest in the country after Chhattisgarh’s, with 37 per cent of the population below the poverty line. The average rate of decline in poverty in Jharkhand up to 2012 was 0.9 per cent per year— much slower than in the rest of India’s rate of 4.8 per cent per year. A female literacy rate of 55 per cent is much lower than the rest of India’s rate of 65 per cent.
