Abstract

This report is an attempt to analyse the fairness of value chains in South Asia in two commodities, i.e. tea and seafood. This study finds that while sales and exports of these commodities fetch considerably high price, little is being paid to workers and small-scale fishermen who are the most important contributors in the production process. Both tea and seafood are labour intensive sectors; however, the labour force is not fairly paid even when we compare them to all other sectors in the economy where the wages they receive is inadequate to sustain the basic needs of life. Social security provisions are not timely paid and due to the increasing informalisation of the sectors, the majority of the labour force are deprived of these provisions. Women workers constantly have to compromise upon their reproductive health for want of health and hygiene facilities. On one end, women workers are already burdened with 'double work'; on the other end, they are limited to selected jobs in the fields and processing facilities.
