Abstract

Some time in October 1704, the 16-gun buccaneer galleon Cinque Ports reached the uninhabited Más a Tierra Island, about 415 miles off central Chile, for restocking food and fresh water. There, sailing master Alexander Selkirk got into an argument with Captain Thomas Stradling about the seaworthiness of the vessel.
