Abstract

India is endowed with a long coast-line of 6,100 km and a vast continental shelf of 595.44 lakh hectares with an estimated annual yield of 39.7 lakh tonnes of marine fishes 1 . The country is also rich in inland water resources which comprise numerous rivers and rivulets, ponds, reservoirs, fresh and brackish water lakes, estuaries and backwaters suitable for both culture and capture fisheries.
