Abstract

The coastal and marine environments of tropical northern Australia are amongst the most pristine in the world. Spanning some 4,500 km of coastline, they support high levels of biodiversity, intact habitats, including some of the world’s largest and most diverse mangrove forests, coral reefs and seagrass meadows, and robust populations of globally threatened species such as dugong and marine turtle as well as numerous valuable and comparatively well-managed fisheries.
