Abstract

This paper surveys current international work in the area of subsidies to the fisheries sector with particular reference to ongoing activities in the OECD, the FAO, APEC and the WTO. Looked at broadly, it is clear that there is a considerable international interest in the topic. Significantly, many of the studies described herein will be substantially completed by the end of 1999, and can be expected to inform the various multilateral discussions on fisheries capacity and trade expected to take place over the coming years.
