This year, we celebrate the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture (IYAFA 2022) following a proclamation made by the General Assembly of the United Nations with the Food and Agriculture Organization at the helm. This signifies formal recognition that artisanal fisheries and aquaculture are integral to food and nutrition security all around the world. IYAFA hopes to bring visibility and increased policy attention to this sector that is often overlooked. IYAFA aims to raise global awareness and understanding of the contributions of artisanal fisherfolks, especially those in vulnerable rural areas, and aquaculture to sustainable development and their significant roles in food security, poverty eradication, and sustainable use of natural resources.
