It is well reckoned in scientific and policy circles that fish production from marine capture fisheries of India has reached a plateau and that further increase from the presently exploited geographical areas is only a remote probability. What is needed is translation of research results into policies, adoption of such policies and implementation of these both in letter and spirit in a way that proper knowledge - based interventions and management would result in a gradual transformation of the present open access and unregulated regime in a well managed and regulated mode, ultimately contributing to sustainability and perhaps to increased fish production.
