Abstract

Africa's role in technology-intensive global supply chains is expected to be increasingly important due to the growing demand for specialized materials and given their abundance on the continent. As recent crises continue to disrupt the global economy, relocating some supply chains to Africa is expected to reduce transportation costs, promote environmental sustainability, and supply chain diversification. Thus, high-tech industries, in particular, the manufacture of electric vehicles and mobile telephones, which require a wide range of raw materials and intermediate inputs, can take advantage of the proximity of the African market, and benefit from opportunities for greater added value and job creation, all of which are advantages that help achieve the objectives of the African Union's Agenda 2063.
