Abstract

In 2017, we (a group of researchers in multiple institutions) set out to study coastal transformation, both geomorphological and socio-economic, and its impacts on fishing communities in Cuddalore District, Tamil Nadu. This case study was part of a larger comparative research project titled ‘Coastal Transformation and Fisher Wellbeing: Synthesized Perspectives from India and Europe’ which included another Indian case study from Palghar District, Maharashtra, and studies from the United Kingdom, Norway and Slovenia. The choice of Cuddalore District was based on two criteria. First, the region hosts a cluster of 49 fishing villages1 spread along the Coromandel Coast. Second, over the past three or more decades, the face of this coastline has been rapidly changing due to the burgeoning of various industrial complexes, from mediumscale units to vast industries, close to the shore, all affecting the waters and reconfiguring the land use of the region
