In response to recommendations by the Thirty-fourth Session of COFI, in 2022 FAO convened two Regional Consultations on the development of coordination frameworks among Regional Fishery Bodies (RFBs). The objective of these consultations was to identify coordination and cooperation issues and opportunities in support of sustainable fisheries in their respective regions. The consultations, organized in the Western Indian Ocean and in the Central Eastern Atlantic Ocean regions, focused on RFBs’ geographical connections and overlaps, species of common interests, both target and bycatch species, on aspects of conservation of biodiversity, as well as on combating illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. The overarching outcome of the consultations was a recognized need for concrete ways to improving cooperation and coordination between RFBs to share data and scientific knowledge, finding solutions to regulatory gaps for some species (both target and by-catch) and aligning procedures and standards for monitoring, control and surveillance.
