Abstract

The State of Mediterranean and Black Sea Fisheries 2023 – Special edition is the fifth instalment of the report prepared by the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean (GFCM) of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on fisheries status, trends and governance in the region. Its first six chapters describe and analyse the current composition of the fishing fleet (Chapter 1), the region’s overall capture fisheries production (Chapter 2), the economic performance and socioeconomic characteristics of capture fisheries (Chapter 3), discards in fisheries (Chapter 4), the status of fishery resources (Chapter 5), and, for the first time, aquaculture production in the region (Chapter 6). Finally, Chapter 7 outlines fisheries management measures put in place by the GFCM to support the sustainability of fisheries and the conservation of the marine environment and ecosystems
