Abstract

The diverse and dynamic “Small in Scale and Big in Value” small-scale fisheries (SSF) sector is a major contributor to aquatic food systems. This article briefly looks into the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 14) funding trends and tracking of investment into the small-scale fisheries sector; and further provides an overview of various financing innovations that are currently available either through public or private finance. It elaborates on the most successfully implemented financial innovations that have been implemented in Asia and are being piloted in the African region where there is no access to finance, particularly for small-scale fisheries. This provides them an opportunity to sustain and support fishery-based enterprises through innovative financing options.
