This new analysis, commissioned by FAO, assesses the adaptation finance gap for fisheries and aquaculture. Based on this new analysis, the indicative costs of adaptation for the fisheries and aquaculture sector are estimated to be USD 4.8 billion/year for all developing countries this decade (up to 2030). An assessment of international public adaptation finance flows for fisheries and aquaculture adaptation for these same countries finds that these were only USD 0.22 billion/year over the period 2017 to 2021. This is only 1 percent of total adaptation flows. Comparing these two numbers, the adaptation finance gap for fisheries and aquaculture is estimated at approximately USD 4.5 billion/year for developing countries. The estimated adaptation finance needs for fisheries and aquaculture is 20 times greater than current adaptation finance flows. This is one of the highest adaptation finance gaps of any sector. This indicates a significant finance shortfall and that a significant increase in adaptation finance flows for fisheries and aquaculture is required.
