Abstract

The Regional capacity-building workshop on women’s groups, associations and cooperatives in African small-scale fisheries was co organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the African Union Development Agency-New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA NEPAD), and the African Union – Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU IBAR). Hosted by the Tanzanian Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries (MLF), it was held at Holiday Inn Hotel, Dar es Salaam, United Republic of Tanzania, on 5–7 December 2023. The workshop aimed at enhancing the organizational and development capacities of women’s groups, associations and cooperatives involved in small-scale fisheries (SSFs) in Africa. It also offered an opportunity to strengthen connections between the groups and to share experiences between women fish processors and traders across the continent. It featured welcome and opening remarks, six topics, field visits to a women’s group, a women’s association and a beach, as well as suggested actions, next steps, an overall evaluation, and closing remarks. Most topics were presented through panels, followed by a series of questions and answers (Q&A) and discussion. The field visits were supplemented by feedback discussions on insights and lessons learned. In attendance at the workshop were 63 representatives from women’s groups, associations and cooperatives from 24 countries, under the flagship of both FAO fisheries programmes and projects, as well as initiatives of the African Union. These include FAO’s Coastal Fisheries Initiative (CFI), the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation funded project (NORAD 352 Component 5), the Unlocking the potential of sustainable fisheries and aquaculture in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific (FISH4ACP) programme, and the Flexible Multi Partner Mechanism/Flexible Voluntary Contribution (FMM/FVC). The project, Enhancing sustainable fisheries management and aquaculture development in Africa (Fisheries Governance Project) (FishGov 2) – implemented by the African Union and funded by the European Union – supported the co organization of the workshop.
