Abstract

Fishing communities have long served as the guardian of food security and the driving force behind local economic development. Despite their invaluable contributions, they continue to face significant challenges. Small-producers, in particular, are often located in remote areas, and regularly experience limited or disadvantaged access to markets, along with inadequate access to essential services such as healthcare and education. This week, delegates from all continents across the globe will meet in Busan, South Korea's maritime hub, for the International Conference on Fishing Communities (ICFC 2023). The event will cast a spotlight on fishing communities and offer a platform for dialogue, addressing the common challenges they face, with the aim of improving their working conditions and well-being. The Conference's central mission is to advocate for a safe, productive and sustainable environment for fishing communities. Delving into a wide array of topics, the conference will explore themes including the role of youth and women in fisheries, the sustainability of the sector, the role of fishing ports, climate change & disaster management, innovation, fishery heritage and the potential of fishing community tourism. FAO is actively participating in the conference, contributing insights on the significance of the work carried out by fishers and the critical importance of their well-being.
