Aquaculture is the world's fastest-growing food production sector and has enormous potential to meet the demand for sustainable food security and nutrition. This week more than 120 delegates from 60 Member countries are meeting to discuss the challenges and future trends of aquaculture in Hermosillo, Mexico (May 16-19) for the 12th session of the COFI Sub-Committee on Aquaculture. There is widespread recognition that demand for farmed aquatic foods has increased the need for sustainable growth, and the rapid expansion of aquaculture speaks to the increasing importance of this sector in supporting food system resilience, providing healthy and nutritious foods. "The aquaculture industry has witnessed remarkable progress in recent decades, contributing to about 50 percent of the total production of aquatic animals in 2021," says Xinhua Yuan, FAO's deputy director for aquaculture.
