GESAMP is a multidisciplinary body of independent experts that provides advice to Sponsoring Organizations, at their request, on pollution and other problems that face marine and coastal environments. For the purpose of its earliest deliberations, GESAMP defined marine pollution as the introduction by man, directly or indirectly, of substances or energy into the marine environment (including estauries) resulting in such deleterious effects as harm to living resources.
