Public access to information about how government policies and programmes affect the environment is a fundamental element of responsible governance. In oceans around the world today, many major commercial fisheries are suffering a crisis of overfishing, even as some of the world's leading fishing nations continue to pour billions of dollars in to subsidies that contribute to excess fishing capacity. This document contains the papers presented at the symposium on the above issue and focuses on the transparency in government subsidies to the fishing sector and on accessing environmental information and looks in to the EU context specifically.
