This thesis is a study of a concrete social reality. It deals with the history, the present developments and possible future directions of the diffusion process of a new technology in marine fisheries. Specifically it analyses the way a newly designed motorised plywood boat was adopted by the traditional, small-scale fishing communities along the lower south-west coast of India during the period 1982-1991. Set against the backdrop of repeated failure of introducing new boat designs into these communities, this thesis explores the concrete socioeconomic and ecological interrelations specific to this case, which provide an explanation for its success.
