This twenty-seventh World Bank Atlas presents key social and economic information organized under three headings, People, Economy and Environment to emphasize the importance of these themes in the development process. In this edition, in addition to the World Bank's standard measure or GNP per capita using the Atlas methodology, a now measure of GNP per capita converted at purchasing power parity (PPP) is introduced. It offers an alternative view of a country's income level relative to others by using international prices to value domestic production. Although more than I billion people still live in poverty, countries in the developing world have achieved substantial gains in living standards over past twenty years. These gains are reflected in improvements In life expectancy and primary school enrollment rates and in declines In infant mortality and infantile illiteracy.
