Abstract

Historically, fishing fleets of distant water fishing nations (DWFNs) operated in the coastal waters of other nations without effective coastal State or international regulation. During the 1970s, however, as a result of the widespread adoption by coastal States of 200 nautical mile exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the fisheries resources of large areas of the ocean became subject to the jurisdiction of coastal States. One of the aim of this book is to promoting the collaboration among coastal states and distant water fishing nations for the sustainable development and conservation of the world's fisheries resources.
