Abstract

Fish is a Filipino’s primary source of animal protein, and the Philippines reports an annual per capita consumption of 36 kg. This paper seeks to understand the linkages between food security and trade liberalization. The 2003 Census of Agriculture and Fisheries of the Philippines’ National Statistics Office estimates the fisherfolk population at 1.8 mn, and fishing communities are found to be among the poorest in the country.
