Abstract

The Indian coast is governed by several official legislations that regulate 'development' activities including construction, industrial activity and coastal infrastructure. One such protective legislation is the CRZ notification that was promulgated in 1991 using the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986, and the Environment (Protection) Rules, 1986. Through such a notification, the coastline of the country was identified as an ecologically sensitive area, where development activities were regulated.
