Abstract

This book draws attention to local innovations to better manage ecosystems that rural women and men rely on in some of the porest parts of the world. Droughts, floods, erosion, deforestation, declining soil fertility, habitat loss, overexploitation is proceeding at an alarming rate. This book is also about poor farmers and fishers-a reason for optimism: given opportunity, knowledge and secure access to resources, people will choose to invest in common efforts to conserve those assets and sustain their livelihoods.
