Abstract

Kerala is the third largest producer of marine fish and the highest fish consuming state in India. The marine fish landings in Kerala during the year 2019 was estimated to be 5.43 lakh tonnes (LT) (6.42 LT during 2018) with a value realization of Rs 12,387 crores atthe point of first sales. Additionally, close to 2LT of fish are being contributed by the inland sector every year. The ongoing crisis associated with the COVID-19 pandemic and its multiple ramifications on fish production, livelihood security and market dynamics have exacerbated Kerala's troubles in the fisheries sector. The COVID-19 is fast spreading across the globe and countries are taking utmost precaution to minimize and mitigate the impact of this dangerous virus. A lockdown has been enforced across the country initially for 21 days from 25.03.2020 to 14.04.2020 which was further extended partially till 31.05.2020 to contain the rapid spread of the virus through contacts. However, the situation continues to be serious and its impact is expected to last for several months ahead.
