This paper uncovers the systematic relationships between the natural resource endowment of a country and a range of variables based upon a literature review. It demonstrates that since the 1960s resource abundance has been associated with disappointing economic development. It also makes a start for expansion of the conventional growth accounting framework to include natural and institutional capital - important for environmentally and socially sustainable development.
