Abstract

Participation has evolved from diaparate roots in areas such as democratic theory, political empowerment, colonial development and planning. This documents the various concepts of participation, the research process, formal fisheries research, indigenous knowledge and knowledge systems in fisheries, colloboration between professional and community based research, and the integration of formal and traditional systems.
