Modern molecular methods increasingly are used to produce organisms that express novel traits.Such methods commonly are referred to as "genetic engineering". Genetic engineering techniques currently are used for such diverse purposes as improvement of agricultural crops and crop yields, enhancement of farmed fish and shellfish broodstocks and their associated yields production of microbes for bioremediation and other specific tasks and changes in disease transmission rates by insect vectors.
