This paper focuses on the how fisheries as a sector offers animal protein to a broad economic cross-section of the society, there by is in an advantageous position to ensure nutritional security. Need for reliable stock estimates, assessment of the efficacy of the existing fishing regulations, present economic status of fishing operations and formulation of key management interventions are stressed upon.
