Senegal, in West Africa, accounts for 60 per cent of exports of fish products to the European Union. The EU has come under considerable criticism for its role in the depletion of West African fish stocks. To address these criticisms the EU has developed a new approach to the fisheries agreements in line with both environmental and social concerns. Since 2003, under the Common Fisheries Policy, public aid for building new fishing boats have been abolished, incorporation of a more ecosystem-based approach to fisheries management based on precautionary principle and increased premiums for scrapping of vessels in order to achieve additional reductions in fishing effort.
