Abstract

The fifth Meeting of Professionals/Experts in support of Fish Safety, Technology and Marketing in Africa was co-organized by the FAO Regional Office for Africa in Accra, Ghana and the Value Chain Team of the Fisheries and Aquaculture Division of FAO, Rome, Italy. It was hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF), Uganda. The meeting reviewed progress achieved in post-harvest fish utilization in Africa and made recommendations to FAO, its member countries and other institutions/organizations with a stake in fish utilization in Africa. The experts’ investigations focused on fresh or live fish handling, fish processing, post-harvest loss assessment, quality and safety, and marketing and socio-economic issues. A report based on the progress since the fourth meeting in 2017 in Elmina, Ghana, was presented by the secretariat to the meeting and this was followed by a technical presentation including the 17 pre-selected papers. This report highlights the recommendations from the papers and includes each of the full papers presented at the meeting.
