Abstract

Tam Giang is an important part of the Tam Giang-Cau Hai lagoon system, which is located in Thua Thien Hue Province, Central Vietnam. This is one of the largest brackish water lagoons in Southeast Asia. The interference of water resources from the rivers and the sea makes the lagoon have a special brackish water environment, create high biodiversity, in which there are many species that bring high economic values. This area provides a partial or entire livelihood to about 300,000 inhabitants. In recent years, the trend of global climate change has had significant impact on Tam Giang’s fishery resources and direct impact on the livelihoods of fishery communities in this lagoon. The research results show there are four manifestations of climate change occurrence in Tam Giang lagoon: an increasing number of intensive storms, extreme temperatures, floods, and sea level rise. Research also indicates that there are differences in the perception and evaluation of the impact of climate change in each different fishermen group. Climate change strongly affects aquaculture households but in some cases climate change also has brought benefits for fishing groups.
