Fishing is one of the most dangerous professions in the world, causing an average fatality rate of 15.96 deaths per 100,000 workers. Over the past two decades, it has claimed around 24,000 lives yearly. However, most of those deaths were reported in Asia, which is home to 3.8 million fishing vessels and 36 million full and part-time fishers. Small-scale fisheries are common in most developing countries, and are a vital source of livelihood providing essential protein for such countries. Yet, the dangers of this job – the onset of unfavorable environmental conditions, technical and health issues are frequently underestimated. This editorial is dedicated to identifying these risks in small-scale fishing communities in developing countries such as Sri Lanka, reviewing risk reduction strategies used globally, and discussing how international cooperation and best practices can help reduce the risks faced by small-scale fishers in their professions around the world.
