This publication aims to provide an overview of the contribution of small-scale fisheries to healthy food systems and sustainable livelihoods in Madagascar. Small-scale fishing in Madagascar is primarily conducted in coastal and inland areas using non-motorized dugout canoes. It was estimated that in 2022, in nearly 2 500 surveyed fishing villages, approximately 242 000 people (men and women) were directly involved in the small-scale fisheries sector, with production reported at around 90 000 tonnes. The contribution of both inland and marine small-scale fisheries is critical for Madagascar. As an accessible and indispensable food source for fishing households, this sector plays a vital role in national food and nutrition security through marketing and distribution networks. It also contributes significantly to exports, generating nearly USD 120 million (2022). The commitment of all stakeholders to implement the SSF Guidelines will help safeguard natural resources and enhance small-scale fisheries’ contribution to sustainable development and food systems in Madagascar. This document offers recommendations and strategies to improve the management of small-scale fisheries, enhance post-harvest value chains, promote fish consumption, and focus on nutrient-rich fish species from small-scale fisheries.
