Abstract
This dossier of documentation has been prepared as background material for the International Conference of Fishworkers and their Supporters, Rome, 4-8 July, 1984. There are four sections, each relating to one of the issues of concern of fishworkers, to be discussed at the conference: 1. The impact of national and international fisheries development programmes and industrialisation on the working and living conditions of fishworkers. 2. The changing characteristics and the future relevance of the small-scale fisheries sector, which in most developing countries continues to be the backbone of the fish economy. 3. The response of fishermen and women to the negative effects of industrialisation and of fishery development programmes, on their work and livelihood. 4. The degradation of the aquatic eco-system caused by indiscriminate fishing and pollution of seas, lakes and rivers, and its effects on fishworkers and on marine resources.
