Fishery resources represent the most important renewable resources in the Arabian/Persian Gulf (“Gulf”) region. However, there is a limited understanding of catch trends, common management regulations and problems facing fisheries’ sustainability. Having a better appreciation of such aspects helps improve policymaking and fisheries management. Here, I underscore the size of marine fisheries and aquaculture with a focus on fisheries and provide some considerations to achieve sustainability. Gulf-wide, I find that total aquatic food production recently surpassed one million tonnes, with fisheries and aquaculture contributing almost equally to the total production. However, seafood in most Gulf countries is produced by fisheries. Around three-quarters of the total fisheries’ catch come from five fishing gears: gillnets, traps, lines, shrimp trawls and encircling nets. Most of the production consists of medium (30-89 cm) to large (>= 90 cm) demersal, reef-associated and pelagic fish. Some of the most common management regulations include gear restrictions and marine protected areas; yet problems pertinent to fisheries management (e.g., weak enforcement) and habitat degradation are likely undermining fisheries’ sustainability. Addressing these problems represents a crucial step toward sustainable fisheries.
