Abstract

Fishery status reports 2024 provides an independent evaluation of the biological and economic status of fish stocks managed solely or jointly by the Australian Government. This 29th edition of the Fishery status reports covers the biological status of 102 fish stocks across 22 fisheries, including those managed both solely and jointly by the by the Australian Government. The reports summarise the performance of these fisheries against the requirements of fisheries legislation and policy. The fisheries assessed in the Fishery status reports 2024 generated an estimated gross value of production (GVP) of $412 million in 2022–23, which is 29% of Australia's total wild-catch fisheries GVP of $1.42 billion. The Fishery status reports form part of a suite of ABARES publications that aim to provide a comprehensive and multidimensional account of the trends and outlook for Australian fisheries. The annual Australian fisheries and aquaculture statistics reports contain comprehensive information on commercial fishing and aquaculture in Australia, including fisheries production and trade data up to and including 2022−23. The Australian fisheries economic indicators reports present results from ABARES fishery surveys of selected fisheries managed by the Australian Government, including detailed analysis of the net economic returns to the Australian community.
