Global data indicates that there is a stark gender gap that exists in all phases of the fisheries value chain (FVC) system. Against this backdrop, this schematic literature review aims to analyze the roles fisherwomen play in the fishing industry, investigate the extent of gender inequality, pinpoint significant obstacles to women’s empowerment in terms of social, legal, and financial aspects, and identify strategies for enhancing women’s agency within the FVC system. The prevalence of patriarchal norms and the lack of institutional support compel fisherwomen to have little control over productive resources and this constraint diminishes women’s decision-making autonomy and impedes the development of agency. This review strongly asserts that women’s participation in the fisheries sector has a high potential to raise the social and economic well-being of their families. To address gender disparities within the fisheries value chain system, it recommends the adoption of a gender transformational strategy, which entails legal amendments, and the implementation of measures aimed at dismantling existing barriers. Moreover, this paper emphasizes that substantial improvements in the living standards of marginalized fisherwomen can be achieved through the provision of infrastructure, financial support, and training initiatives.
