Abstract

According to figures provided by countries or estimated by the FAO, the African continent produces more than 3.3 million tonnes of wild freshwater fish annually. The added value of this production was estimated at USD 6.3 billion in 2019. These fisheries are present in practically all countries and provide full or part-time employment to more than 10 million people, more than half of whom are women. In addition, this production constitutes a source of animal protein and essential nutrients for at least 300 million people, including in extremely isolated and insecure rural areas.
