Abstract
This research was originally conceptualised as an ICSSR project. It was funded by the Council form 19896-1989 and the report was submitted in 1990. While much of the research had already taken place during organisational work among fishworkers, the study also benefited from earlier enquires like the work with Franciois Houtart which focussed more on the cultural processes published as “Kerala Fishermen: Culture and Social Organisation’. The Centre for Social Analysis, Madurai made its library and documentation available as did the P.C.O. Centre and the Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum. The team at the Centre for Social Analysis also facilitated the process of reflection through the colloquiums is organised all through this period. We are thankful to Bas Wielenga, John Kurien and Rolf Willman for their valuable comments on the manuscript.
