Voracious predators and key forage for sharks, seabirds and marine mammals small tunas have an outsized role within marine food webs as well as providing food and livelihoods for coastal communities. Although they often live in coastal marine areas they can also travel far out to the high seas. Fisheries management of these species is important but often over-looked by Regional Fisheries Management Organizations. This fact sheet focuses on why scientifically important management strategies are vitally needed to implement the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries Management (EAFM) and examines which ones are useful for different small tuna species.
