Multispecies/multigear (MSMG) fisheries are globally common, especially in tropical and subtropical regions in Asia-Pacific, Africa, and South America, where various vessels and gears operate simultaneously targeting a group of species. Unlike single-species industrial fisheries, these systems are managed as mixed stocks due to interactions and fishing practices. However, sustainability reporting often relies on single-species assessments, leading to incomplete and potentially misleading conclusions. Global practice shows that multispecies/multigear fisheries are underrepresented by traditional management tools. This document outlines pragmatic approaches for the assessment and management of MSMG fisheries suited to local conditions, with a particular focus on small-scale fisheries, vital for food security and livelihoods, who often lack data and resources. It concludes with practical recommendations for the assessment and management of MSMG fisheries
