This paper outlines the importance of integrating social dimensions into fisheries management, particularly in small-scale fisheries. It emphasizes that fisheries are socio-ecological systems, and that effective management must consider livelihoods, food security, gender equality, indigenous knowledge, customary tenure, and participatory governance. The paper highlights that while frameworks like the Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries (EAF) and the 2014 Voluntary Guidelines for Securing Sustainable Small-scale Fisheries in the Context of Food Security and Poverty Eradication (SSF Guidelines) already promote the inclusion of social dimensions, more systematic and context specific integration is needed, as well as mechanisms for its effective operationalization and implementation. The paper stresses the need for multi-dimensional fisheries management objectives, inclusive data collection, multi-stakeholder engagement, and cross-sectoral collaboration to address trade-offs and inform management decisions. It calls for capacity-building, use of indigenous and scientific knowledge, and development of indicators to monitor social impacts.
